What is an Erasmus scholarship?
Erasmus is a program subsidized by the European Commission and is part of the Lifelong Learning Program. The program aims to stimulate higher education by the European Commission in the European Union and to give students the opportunity to stay abroad for their studies.
The Erasmus grant does not only apply to Dutch students. There are currently 31 countries participating in the program and over 3,100 colleges and universities are enrolled. Nearly 2 million students have gone abroad for their studies using these scholarships. This increases every year by several hundred thousand students.
If you are going to do an internship abroad, it is wise to know for sure whether you are entitled to an Erasmus grant. On this page, you will find all the information you need to find out.
When do I qualify for an Erasmus scholarship?
In principle, all European students who want to go abroad for their studies will be eligible for an Erasmus scholarship. A requirement is that the country where the students go to in Europe belongs to or is one of the program countries.
These countries are also members of the Erasmus program. It does not matter whether the student is doing an internship or studying abroad. For more information about which countries participate in the program, please visit the website of the European Commission Europe.
There are a number of conditions you must meet to be eligible:
- You must be registered with a higher education educational institution.
- You must have completed your propaedeutic year (or first year). An exception can only be made if an internship is part of the first year of the program.
- You will study or do an internship in one of the participating countries.
- You must be a resident of one of the countries affiliated with the Erasmus + program.
- You go abroad for at least 3 months and ensure that this is officially recognized.
How can I apply for the Erasmus scholarship?
The scholarship is distributed among affiliated educational institutions. You can, therefore, apply for the Erasmus + grant at your college or university. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must plan to do an internship or study abroad.
All affiliated colleges and universities have their own designated coordinator for the program.
Contact the international office of your school, they will introduce you to the coordinator of the program. This will then give you more information and help you with the application. It can take a few months before your application is approved, so it is wise to start on time.
It is advisable to start the application immediately when you know that you are going on an internship abroad because you have many more things to arrange.
Not all applications are approved. There are a maximum number of students to which the schools can subsidize. If your scholarship is not approved, there are other options and scholarships you can look at. You will find more information about this on this page.
How much is the Erasmus scholarship?
The amount of the Erasmus scholarship is at least 200 Dollars per month and is further determined by various factors. This depends on where you go abroad and whether you are studying or doing an internship.
In most cases, students who are abroad for their internship or study receive compensation of between 250 Dollars and 450 Dollars. In principle, the Erasmus grant is intended as compensation for travel costs and other costs that you incur abroad. Your educational institution ultimately determines what amount you will receive over which period. You will receive the Erasmus grant for a minimum of three months and a maximum of 12 months.
Are you going to do an internship abroad? We advise you to in any case, contact your educational institution. Ask about what is possible and whether you are entitled to an Erasmus grant or another grant.
How and when is the Erasmus scholarship paid?
In most cases, the scholarship is paid in two installments when you go abroad for less than half a year.
The first part of the scholarship is paid when the learning agreement or the internship contract has been signed by you, your educational institution and your internship company.
The first payout is in most cases two thirds of the total amount you receive. You will receive the second and last part of the Erasmus grant when you return to the Netherlands. You must be able to demonstrate that you have obtained your academic results and that all parties are satisfied with the way you have completed your internship or study abroad. In some cases you are obliged to do an extra test, for example this may be a language test.
It is very important that you are on time with submitting the application documents and supporting documents. If you do not hand it in on time, the financing will stop. It may even be the case that the amount paid out is reclaimed by Erasmus. Therefore, put in your agenda on which dates you have to hand in which documents to ensure that you do not forget this.
What can I use the Erasmus scholarship for?
In principle, the Erasmus grant is intended as compensation for travel costs, accommodation costs, and any additional costs that you incur during your internship or study abroad.
However, you are not obliged to do this and you can decide for yourself where you spend the money. Of course, it is wise to spend the amount in a good way, but a nice evening with your friends is also good, right?
