With a population of just over 3 million, Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf.
Dubai started growing in 1900 with the export of oil but there is not much to show for that these days. The city focuses mainly on tourism, logistics, financial services and real estate.
Dubai has long been one of the major economic players in West Asia. Dubai is about an hour and a half drive from the Metropolis Abu Dhabi, where many internships can also be found.
Dubai is also called the shopping center of the Middle East with more than 70 shopping centers that can be visited in the city. In addition, Dubai is known for its extremely large skyscrapers, with of course the largest in the world; the Burj Khalifa.
Climate and culture
Dubai is in the middle of the desert so as you can imagine, it can get very hot. In the months of April to October the maximum temperatures are between 33 and 42 degrees celsius. In these month it hardly ever rains. The rest of the months have average temperatures above 20 degrees. Most people in Dubai spend most of their days in air conditioned rooms.
The culture revolves mainly around the Islam, with some instances of the original culture called Bedouins. There is a call for prayer 5 times a day and there are a number of beautiful mosques in Dubai.
That said, there is a lot of Western influence, most people work for large international companies and this is where most internships can be found. Students say that Dubai can be a very exiting place to do an internship but there are also some disadvantages. It is not common for woman to walk alone on the street and it can be hard to communicate with the locals.
